DEPTH PSYCHOLOGY
Depth Psychology or psychoanalysis investigates the unconscious mind. It is a system of Psychotherapy that aims to treat mental disorders by exploring the interaction of conscious and unconscious elements to bring repressed conflicts into the consciousness, utilizing psychodynamics, free association and dream interpretation.
Freud was the father of Psychoanalysis and thus, Psychotherapy. By giving voice to the “Psyche” which had been disconnected from science in western medicine, he was able to develop a Holistic approach to Mental Health.
Wilhelm Reich states that Freud discovered the principle of Energy functioning of the Psychic Apparatus and his importance in the field of Psychoanalysis is of a Scientific nature, since his discovery of the Libido Energy tapped into natural Science, due to the fact that it could be measured in the Geiger Counter. Thus, Psychoanalysis became Science. For the first time in history, the mind was Scientific, and that was the greatest of his contributions to the field of Psychology. Later, Freud was in his way to discover the Bio-Energy activity in the project manuscript, but he didn't finish his research studies.
As a Neurologist, Freud recognized that most therapies were treating the "branch" and not the "root" of the disfunction.
Psychoanalysis is a holistic field linking Science and Healing, body and mind, the original approach which integrates the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual domains. Jung compared analysis to practices like Alchemical Taoism, Zen, Yoga and Ancient Philosophy.
TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOLOGY
Transpersonal psychology, or spiritual psychology, is a field of psychology that integrates the spiritual and transcendent aspects of the human experience with the framework of modern psychology. The transpersonal is defined as "experiences in which the sense of identity or self extends beyond the individual to encompass wider aspects of humankind, life, psyche or cosmos". Also defined as "development beyond conventional, personal or individual levels".
Matters considered in transpersonal psychology include spiritual self-development, self beyond ego, mystical experiences, trance, spiritual crises or spiritual emergency, spiritual evolution, religious experiences, altered states of consciousness, spiritual practices, and other sublime, unusually expanded experiences. The discipline attempts to integrate spiritual experience within modern psychological theory, to formulate new theory to encompass such experience.
ART-THERAPY
Art Therapy is both a diagnostic as well as a therapeutic tool. Multiple studies prove the efficacy of treating countless ailments through the many forms of art.
Neuroscience and research using brain technology contribute to the understanding of just how the mechanisms of art therapy support self-regulation, attuned relationships, and positive change.
With the use of electroencephalogram (EEG) to explore differences in cortical activity, it shows a consistent pattern of increased power immediately following art-making.
But the great significance of art is the capacity to transmit that with is not conscious, or pre-verbal. In the case of minors, the brain is not fully formed and they often lack the capacity to abstract feelings, so they tend to somatize. A child will never say: "I'm anxious", he will say: "I have a tummy ache".
Through the process of creating, the individual re-creates what's unconscious and finds an outlet to that which can't be named. Therefore the body doesn't have to express it in the form of dis-ease.
The interpretation of the creation doesn't differ much from the interpretation of dreams, we analyze the symbolism as to decode the hidden message.
Art therapy is a universal tool that crosses generations and cultures. You don't have to be proficient in art-making. The creative process is innate to the human condition and satisfies a dual function: that of communicating and healing.
